The contest was first broadcast on WIP (AM). This yearThe Wing Bowl is a Philadelphia chicken-wing-eating contest held just before the Super Bowl each year. About 150 people attended Wing Bowl I (held in a hotel) in 1993 to see a competition between two contestants. The Wing Bowl is traditionally held on the Friday preceding the Super Bowl, which comes on Sunday after Wing Bowl.

Competitors gain entry to the contest by completing eating stunts like consuming the “WIP vending machine in 24 minutes” (as one 2010 competitor did according to WIP’s website) or participating in an official Wing Off, where Wing-Bowl wannabees eat as many wings as they can in 10 minutes.
