Threat of a snowy Friday put the Emergency Management staff on their toes at Birmingham. Alabama and Shelby county schools alongside many other area schools, however, planned to ‘wait and see.’ A winter snow storm warning from NWS was issued earlier in the day that was likely to hit Central Alabama.

The National Weather Service personnel have been kept busy on their radars by the present prevailing cold weather and snow storm threats over the past many days now. Public schools were advised to take precautionary measures by the NWS before hand in various areas since it was anticipated that the storm might shower many inches of snow during the day on Friday.

However, a number of schools in Birmingham, Vestavia Hills, Shelby County, Hoover and also Alabama University announced that they would decide about the closures as per the situation’s demand. It was learned that these schools were waiting for the weather changes to occur only then they would decide what course of action to take.

The storm warning in question was reported to be in effect since midnight up to 6 in the evening on Friday and it was predicted by the NWS that central Alabama’s southwestern parts might experience snowfall around midnight. NWS further had informed that Livingston and Demopolis areas might also be receiving quick snow anytime during Friday.

Angel Montanez the meteorologist at NWS had also predicted an accumulation of 2 to 4 inches for Shelby and Jefferson counties and flurries for Birmingham vicinities in the wee hours of Friday morning. Careful driving was advised by the NWS and all the Rescue Service and Fire department personnel were reportedly at SWIFT Alert, in anticipation of a severe weather.
