Metro North fire Manhattan incident – Updates

The Metro North fire that caused train service to shut down began just after 11:30 a.m. today, braking out under the 138th Street Bridge. A fire broke out around 11.38 this morning in Manhattan, New York. Flames and smoke could be seen under a railway bridge on 132nd Street and trains Metro-North was closed for several hours in and out of Grand Central Terminal.
According to the Fire Department of New York fire, there were no reported injuries. Marjorie Anders, a spokesman for Metro-North Service said the fire beneath the bridge made of steel and concrete may have been caused by the explosion of a transformer near the track. The explosion set fire to piles to protect against damage caused by boat traffic.
This particular bridge when the explosion occurred earlier today was built by the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad. The 138th Street Bridge was built in 1950.
According to officials investigated techbical was ordered to establish the exact cause of the fire and to conclude whether the explosion damaged the steel structure of the bridge.
Around 1.45 pm the situation was brought under control and subway service was restarted on the three lines involved.
